REPORT: Detroit Lions’ next offensive coordinator may become available…again!

It may have taken much longer that is should have but the Detroit Lions have finally moved on from Jim Bob Cooter as their offensive coordinator.

So, the question is, who will Lions’ head coach Matt Patricia bring on to replace Cooter. Plenty of names have been tossed around as possible replacements but there is one name who is very intriguing to me.

Kliff Kingsbury.

Yes, Kingsbury recently signed to be the next offensive coordinator at USC and Trojans’ athletic director Lynn Swann has told NFL teams they may not interview his new hire, but there has been a new development.

According to a report from Pro Football Talk, Kingsbury is contemplating leaving USC altogether, paying his own buyout, and taking his chances of landing at least an OC job in the NFL.

“With Swann, the Athletic Director at USC, blocking Kingsbury from interviewing for head-coaching vacancies with the Jets and Cardinals, Kingsbury may simply resign his position as Trojans offensive coordinator and move on.

Per multiple sources, Kingsbury’s contract has a very low buyout. But the buyout never came up because the NFL teams, honoring the strong mandate issued at last month’s ownership meeting, contacted Swann and requested permission to interview Kingsbury. Swann said no, and that was the end of it.

But that may not be the end of it. Kingsbury, the former Texas Tech head coach, may simply pay the buyout, walk away, and see what happens with any NFL head-coaching or offensive coordinator opportunities.”

As soon as Kingsbury was fired by Texas Tech following the 2018 season, speculation began of him heading to the NFL. Most of that speculation began because of Kingsbury’s history with working with Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (While Mahomes was at Texas Tech).

At 39 years old, Kingsbury does not have any NFL coaching experience but he does have 11 years of experience at the college level, including the last six seasons as head coach of Texas Tech.

So, Nation, would you like to see the Lions hire Kliff Kingsbury to be their next offensive coordinator?
