Pat Perles, the son of former Michigan State head coach George Perles, will be joining the Michigan Wolverines as an analyst/assistant offensive line coach according to ESPN’s Field Yates.

At 55 years old, Pat Perles has experience coaching and scouting at both the college and NFL level. His last known coaching gig was in 2013 when Perles was the offensive line coach at Syracuse. Prior to that, Perles has had multiple stops in his coaching career including North Dakota State (2003-08), Michigan State (2000-02), and Toledo (1989-91).
In the NFL, he’s coached with the Kansas City Chiefs (2011-13) and Los Angeles Rams (1992-93). In 2014, Perles was hired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a player-personnel scout.
Pat Perles also coached a few seasons in the CFL.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh has been beefing up his staff with experienced coached in recent weeks. In addition to Pat Perles, the Wolverines also brought in former Georgia Tech defensive coordinator Nate Woody as an analyst. Analysts are not considered an official member of the coaching staff, cannot work with players on the field during practices or games, or take part in off-campus recruiting.

Perles’ father, George, coached at Michigan State from 1983 to 1994 and is a Spartan legend. In 12 years, he led the Spartans to two Big Ten Conference titles and seven bowl games. His best team was the 1987 Spartans, which won the school’s last outright Big Ten title in the pre-championship game era and defeated USC in the 1988 Rose Bowl.
In January of 1990, George Perles became Michigan State’s athletic director while remaining head football coach. Having one man as both athletic director and head football coach proved controversial, and in 1992 George Perles resigned as athletic director but remained football head coach.
George Perles was elected to the Board of Trustees of Michigan State University in 2006. He began serving his first eight-year term on January 1, 2007.
In November of 2014, George Perles was re-elected to the board of trustees of Michigan State University. His second eight-year term began on January 1, 2015. George Perles announced his resignation effective immediately on November 29, 2018, citing health concerns.
Pat Perles made headlines back in September of 2018 when he defended his father from accusations that George had helped cover up a rape by Larry Nassar in 1992 when he was MSU’s athletic director.
