Matt Patricia comments on Detroit Lions’ timeline for winning

As Detroit Lions‘ fans we have waited and then we have waited some more.

Yet, the franchise we love so much has continued to fail when it comes to winning. Specifically, when it comes to winning playoff games and contending for Super Bowls.

On Tuesday, Lions’ head coach Matt Patricia joined Pro Football Talk Live and he said that though the team is trying to build for sustained success, the goal is to win now.

“We’ve got to do it right away,” Patricia said on PFT Live. “Everyone’s timelines are now. We understand that. But realistically, I think, for us we’re just trying to build it the right way so that we have sustained success once we get it to where we want to go. Certainly for the fans we’re trying to do that as quick as possible.”

Though the Lions were 6-10 in 2018, they have come out firing in free agency and have added some much-needed pieces to the puzzle. You can bet they will do their best to do the same when the NFL Draft rolls around.

One thing is for certain, if the Lions do not improve in 2019, heads could roll.

Free agency is well underway and the Detroit Lions have been one of the most active teams in the league. They have added an edge rusher (Trey Flowers), a tight end (Jesse James), and a nickel cornerback who could end up lining up on the outside (Justin Coleman).

That being said, the Lions still have plenty of needs and the 2019 NFL Draft presents a golden opportunity for Bob Quinn to improve the roster.

So, without further ado, let’s take a look at what the Detroit Lions 2019 ‘Perfect’ NFL Draft would look like.

Round 1, Pick 8

Ed Oliver (DL) Houston

As we speak, the defensive line is one of the Detroit Lions’ biggest strengths. That being said, the more I watch film on Ed Oliver, the more I think he will be a perennial Pro Bowl player at the NFL level. If the Lions add Oliver at No. 8, they would have one of the best defensive lines in football.

NOTE: I am still counting on the Lions signing free agent linebacker Zach Brown!!! If they do not, LB could be the pick in Round 1. If that is the case, I would prefer the Lions trade back into the middle of the first round and take Devin Bush Jr.

From The Draft Network:

PROS: Ed Oliver is one of the most athletic interior defensive linemen I’ve ever scouted. Has movement skills and agility that are just off the charts. Makes plays away from his initial gap that are jaw-dropping. Range of a linebacker. First step to beat anyone. Explosive and sudden in all his movements, easily able to redirect and keep blockers off balance. Always plays low and leveraged, with elite pad level and hand placement to drive through opponents. Creates an insane push off the snap and typically re-sets the line of scrimmage. Power to bull rush and the quickness to win the edge. Excellent bend to turn tight corners to the quarterback. Can backdoor gaps and still make plays. Incredible motor and will chase down plays from everywhere. Never takes a play off. Gets in on stops other defensive tackles couldn’t dream of being a part of.

CONS: Cheats his assignment at times. Gets upfield in a hurry and can sometimes widen his gap as a result. Doesn’t have great length and will get chest-to-chest with opponents at times. Repertoire of moves could be deeper. Wins more with athletic ability and raw power than refined hand usage. Will spin to get off blocks at times, turning his back to the line of scrimmage. Rumors are he plays at sub-280, which could concern teams projecting him out against better/bigger competition.
