The Detroit Pistons made a trade today, sending Darrun Hilliard to the Houston Rockets in exchange for cash considerations.
The Rockets then promptly moved Hilliard to the Los Angeles Clippers as part of the trade that sent Chris Paul to Houston. Because the Rockets were looking for non-guaranteed contracts to help facilitate the Paul trade, Hilliard was a prime candidate. His $1.4 million contract for next season isn’t guaranteed until this Saturday.

That, combined with the drafting of reserve shooting guard Luke Kennard, meant Hilliard was unlikely to earn a more permanent spot in Detroit’s lineup. The move will open up a roster space for the Pistons despite not saving that much in cap space.
Originally drafted by the Pistons out of Villanova 28th overall in the 2015 NBA Draft, Hilliard appeared in 39 games (starting in one) this past season, averaging 9.8 minutes per game with 3.3 PPG, 0.8 rebounds, and 0.8 assists. In 77 career games, he’s averaged 3.6 PPG, 1.0 rebounds, 0.8 assists in 10.1 minutes per game.
Hilliard later took to Twitter to thank Pistons fans for his time in Detroit.
