Basketball coaches know all about the 5-second rule in their sport. If they cannot inbound the ball within five seconds, it’s a violation and the ball is turned over. One can certainly imagine that they are big enforcers of the 5-second rule when it comes to food as well.
Take Michigan State head coach and Hall of Famer Tom Izzo. He was caught red-handed recently dropping food and enacting the well-known 5-second rule when it comes to eating food.

All in one fluid motion, he acts on the all-important rule when it comes to eating dropped food.
Did you know there’s actually a Wikipedia page for the 5-second rule? It’s defined as such:
“…a western cultural food hygiene concept, that states that there is a defined window where it is permissible to pick up food (or sometimes cutlery) after it has been dropped and thus exposed to contamination. Some may believe this assertion, whereas most people employ the rule as an amusing social fiction that allows them to eat a dropped piece of food, despite the potential reservations of their peers.”
Izzo clearly abides by the rule here, picking up the piece of popcorn within the standard time frame, without any concern for the gentleman he continues to chat with throughout the entire act.
Well played, coach.
