Anyone who is remotely familiar with Detroit Tigers baseball is well-aware of the work and/or history of Rod Allen.

The former big leaguer and current Tigers color commentator played just parts of three seasons (31 games) in the majors between 1983-1988. His major league career is most remember for the 15 games he played with Detroit in 1984, when he hit .296 and helped lead the Tigers to the 1984 World Series title.

The majority of Rod Allen’s playing career was played in the minor leagues or other countries. He spent the final three seasons of his career in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball Organization with the Hiroshima Toyo Carp club.

Perhaps more iconic than his very solid production he had in Japan was one incident where he was hit by a pitcher and did the unthinkable. Rod Allen didn’t just charge the mound, he chased the pitcher all over the field, leaving both teams to clear their benches in an attempt to restore order.

But Mr. Allen was not having any of it.

Allen has since then hung up the cleats and moved into the booth along side Mario Impemba, winning two Emmy Awards along the way. He’s called the majority of Tigers games on Fox Sports Detroit this season, a move that has been received well by fans according to a survey in February.

He often brings a unique character and flare to his color commentating. So much so, that a line he said last season following a James McCann homer at Target field has rained down on Detroit as a popular phrase for Tigers fans. So much so, it’s even put on boats.
