The 2017 season has not gone as planned for the Detroit Tigers. Not only are they completely out of the playoff picture but now they will be without their top pitcher, Michael Fulmer for the remainder of the season.

According to reports, Fulmer will have ulnar transposition surgery on Tuesday and the recovery will take 3-4 months.

From Neurosurgical Associates, PC:

The ulnar nerve is a single nerve that arises from a group of nerves called the brachial plexus. It runs down the inner aspect of the arm, behind a bony prominence on the inner side of the elbow called the medial epicondyle, and all the way down to the hand, supplying sensation to the muscles of the forearm and hand along the way.

Ulnar nerve transposition is a procedure performed to move the ulnar nerve from behind the medial epicondyle to a suitable position where it is not irritated or pinched by this bony prominence. The word transposition means to change in position.

After winning the American League Rookie of the Year award a year ago, Fulmer took a bit of a step back in 2017 as he went 10-12 with a 3.83 ERA for the season.

Assuming the surgery goes well, Fulmer will likely be the Tigers Opening Day starter when the 2018 season rolls around.

Other News:

In other Tigers news, shortstop Jose Iglesias is expected to return to the Tigers prior to Wednesday’s game against the red-hot Cleveland Indians. He is currently in Miami, Florida helping his family get situated following Hurricane Irma.
