Dear Jim Harbaugh: YOU know what to do

Jim Harbaugh Michigan RB Blake Corum comments on Jim Harbaugh's Return Jim Harbaugh makes Rose Bowl Prediction Jim Harbaugh coaching odds Jim Harbaugh in striking distance

Dear Coach Harbaugh,

Heading into the 2017 season, not many of the so-called “experts” were giving your football team much of a chance to win the Big Ten. That certainly did not come as a surprise because of all of the new starters on both sides of the ball.

But the big question, at least for Michigan football fans, was who were you going to name the starting quarterback? Would you roll with Wilton Speight, despite his struggles against good teams? Had John O’Korn impressed you enough in the offseason to earn your trust on the big stage? Or, would you cut your losses with the veterans and give the keys to the youngster, Brandon Peters?

Whenever you were asked, you stressed that all three of those guys were doing an outstanding job and improving every day. You pointed out that each of them was doing a good job leading the offense and not turning the ball over in practice. Based on your words, which we know is not gospel, it sounded like there was a serious quarterback battle taking place and we would not know who the starter would be until the last possible moment.

For all we know, YOU knew all along that Speight was who you would roll with when the season got underway. Guess what, coach? Though many Michigan fans did not necessarily agree with the decision, we trusted you were allowing the best quarterback to start things off.

But through the first three games, your offense struggled to put points on the board and much of the blame could be placed on Speight’s inability to make big throws when called upon. In fact, and we know you are well aware of this, the offense, heading into Saturday’s game against Purdue, was 1-for-10 in the Red Zone, which placed you dead-last in the Big Ten.

It was obvious to most of us that moving forward, Wilton Speight was not the right guy for the job. Yet, he started the game on the road against Purdue and it was more of the same. He looked uncomfortable when even the slightest amount of pressure was put on him and there was no way you would win with him playing for the entire game.

Then something happened that NO true fan ever wants to see happen to a player. Speight went down with an injury, which may or may not be severe, but it was enough for him to miss the rest of the game. You replaced him with John O’Korn and the offense looked much better, almost immediately. When all was said and done, O’Korn threw for 270 yards and led the team to four touchdowns on way to a 28-10 win.

Coach, like I said, NOBODY with a brain is hoping that Speight’s injury is severe. In fact, we hope he is 100% healthy and ready to dress when you take on Indiana in a couple of weeks. But, maybe it was a blessing in disguise and we hope he never has to start another game at the University of Michigan. Speight has hit his ceiling and it’s not high enough to win against great teams.

Will John O’Korn lead your team to a Big Ten Title and a berth in the Collge Football Playoff? Only time will tell. But we know, YOU know, that Speight is not the best option at this point.

Coach Harbaugh, YOU know what to do.

It’s time for you to name John O’Korn the starting quarterback at the University of Michigan for the remainder of the season.
