It’s official, Brad Ausmus is finally gone as manager of the Detroit Tigers! Well, he is not gone yet, but you get the point.

So, the big talk of the town has been about who is going to be named as the next Tigers manager. Names that have been tossed around include Omar Vizquel, Ron Washington, Gabe Kapler, Ron Gardenhire, and Manny Acta, just to name some.

But one name that has not really been thrown into the mix is one that the Tigers are reportedly considering.

According to MLB insider, Jon Heyman, a source of his has indicated that former Tiger Phil Nevin is considered a “strong candidate” by the team.

From FanRag:

Phil Nevin, a San Francisco Giants coach and former minor-league manager in the Detroit Tigers and Arizona Diamondbacks organizations, is considered a “strong candidate” for the Tigers job, one person familiar with their thinking said.

Tigers GM Al Avila knows Nevin from the three-plus years Nevin managed in the Tigers system, at Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo, though it’s probably too soon to say if anyone’s considered the favorite — many names have been connected to the job and Avila promises an “extensive” search.

Tigers general manager Al Avila recently announced that though Ausmus would finish out the 2017 season, he would not be back in 2018.

When talking about potential candidates to become the next manager of the Detroit Tigers, Avila stressed the importance of experience. He noted that experience may come from the Major League Baseball level, but that it could also come from the minors.

Nation, would you be in favor of Phil Nevin becoming the next Tigers manager?

    • I don’t even think he went on the road this year for broadcasts…so not very likely to be able to handle managing.

  1. Nevin doesn’t have major league managing experience. I would think Fredi Gonzalez would be the favorite right now. He has had success managing two other major league teams and received manager of the years votes in 5 of those years. He has Detroit ties and connections. He is also only 53 years old.
