Local columnist has bold ‘prediction’ for key Detroit Lions player vs. Saints

If you regularly read the columns of one Carlos Monarrez of the Detroit Free Press, you probably have come away wondering if he has been directed to stir the pot. After all, he has recently written pieces titled, “Time to throw that old Barry Sanders No. 20 Lions jersey in the trash,” along with “Caldwell shouldn’t keep his job in ’18,” just to name a couple.

On Friday, Monarrez was at it again as his latest column, “Lions’ Stafford won’t finish Saints game,” was published on Freep.com. So, I clicked thinking that this was a bold prediction and I wanted to read the rationale, even though I knew it would be obvious.

It did not take long for Monarrez to pull a Fred Flintstone as his opening sentence already had him backtracking a bit in comparison to the title of the piece.

“Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford should not finish Sunday’s game at New Orleans.”

What is it, Carlos? Are you saying Stafford “won’t” make it through the entire game vs. the Saints or that he “should not” make it through all four quarters? Or was it your editor who clearly did not read the opening sentence before writing the headline?

Anyways, Monerrez went on to “make it clear” that he is in no way questioning Stafford’s “manhood,” but rather pointing out that the Lions signal-caller is clearly not 100% and that the Saints will be coming after him on Sunday.

“Let me be clear about this. I’m not questioning Stafford’s manhood. I’m questioning his human hood. As in, it would be inhuman to expect Stafford to make it through a whole NFL game when the Saints know they can target Stafford and his right ankle.

If you saw Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers, you saw the kind of pain Stafford was in and how it got progressively worse. In the final two drives, he was barely able to plant his right foot.”

To sum things up (so you don’t have to read it like I did), Monerrez believes that Stafford should start, but if at any point Jim Caldwell believes the injured ankle is preventing Stafford from leading the Lions to a win, he should replace him.

Thanks, Captain Obvious!
