Following their third straight loss of the 2017 season, the Detroit Red Wings have made a trade.

According to reports, the Red Wings have traded center Riley Sheahan and a 2018 fifth-round draft pick to the Pittsburgh Penguins for winger Scott Wilson and a 2018 third-round pick.

This move was all about the Red Wings shedding some salary so they could get under the salary cap after signing Andreas Athanasiou on Friday.

In 78 games for the Penguins in the 2016-2017 season, Wilson scored eight goals and had 18 assists.

Sheahan’s contract runs through this season and his salary is $2.075 million, while Wilson’s cap hit comes in at $625,000 and his deal also runs through 2017-18. Detroit now has $1,470,220 in available cap space thanks to long-term injury reserve allowances.

Additionally, this move benefits the Penguins, who were in search of depth at the center position following the offseason departures of Nick Bonino to the Nashville Predators and Matt Cullen to the Minnesota Wild.

Though Sheahan came to Detroit with promise, he struggled greatly last season, only scoring two goals all year. Ironically, they both came in the final game of the season after the Red Wings had already long been eliminated from Stanley Cup playoff contention.
