The USPBL just announced its schedule for their third season and baseball fans in the Detroit area should be excited. With open tryouts, cheap tickets, a great fan environment and quality players, the USPBL is what baseball should be. While the first year success was a bit surprising, it is easy to see what makes the league so enticing for fans.

Founder and Chairman, Andrew Appleby has done a great job giving fans the kind of entertainment that they want. With top of the line safety netting surrounding the field fan safety is incredible making it the perfect place for children to experience a live baseball game. Jimmy John’s Field, home to all league games, also features a picnic area in right field and a suite only 30 ft from home plate, closest in pro baseball history. The fan experience does not stop there, Thursday’s range from heritage nights to “Thirsty Thursday” which is accompanied by discounted beer. Fireworks every Friday night, live music on Saturday, and kid’s day on Sunday all add to the appeal. More details can be found in the DSN Exclusive Interview with the chairman himself. Appleby intentionally catering to the fans has already paid off and this will only improve as popularity grows.

Even though the fan experience may be the primary selling point of the USPBL, the quality of play is high as well. After attracting top college talent for its first two seasons, 18 players have already signed with Major league organizations. In the league’s third season the recognition has grown and these numbers will likely to expand.

The USPBL also holds open tryouts, signing over 30 players from the 2016 group! If anyone feels like they still have some game left in them tryouts usually happen toward the end of April. DSN’s own Paul Rochon attended tryouts and gives a detailed breakdown for those interested in learning more.

With the Tigers heading into a rebuild, paying top dollar to see Miguel Cabrera play with a bunch of minor leaguers at Comerica Park is not a great value. With Jimmy John’s field only an hour away from downtown in Utica, the USPBL allows baseball fans to enjoy the sport in a great environment and at a low cost. Although you’ll have to wait until the season kicks off in May, attending a USPBL game should be on everybody’s bucket list this summer.
