WEEK 6: Ferris State travels to Ann Arbor, Western Michigan hosts top-ranked Denver

We have ourselves a full slate of games from all seven teams in the state of Michigan this weekend. And of the seven, six will be playing here in the mitten.

FERRIS STATE BULLDOGS vs. MICHIGAN WOLVERINES

RECAP: Ferris State (2-5-1) went 0-1-1 last weekend on the road against Bemidji State, getting outscored by the Beavers 5-2 in the series. Michigan (4-2) earned themselves a split on the road against No. 15 Penn State, potting nine goals in the two games combined.

UP NEXT: These two teams last met in October of 2016 up in Big Rapids, a 2-1 victory for the Wolverines. Michigan holds a 2-1-1 advantage over Ferris since the former rivals split from the previously-existing CCHA. The Bulldogs are seeking their first win in Ann Arbor since February of 2006.

PLAYERS TO WATCH: There will be a battle of siblings in this series when brothers Coale (FSU) and Josh (MICH) Norris take the ice. Oldest of three brothers, Coale has just one goal in seven games for the ‘Dogs. Josh, meanwhile, for Michigan has racked up five points in six games.

LAKE SUPERIOR STATE LAKERS

RECAP: Lake Superior (1-5-2) dropped both games on the road against Michigan State last weekend, allowing ten goals to the Spartans versus just three for the Lakers. LSSU goalies Nick Kossoff and Mareks Mitens faced a combined 75 shots on goal in the two games.

UP NEXT: The Lakers return home to host Alaska-Anchorage (0-5-1). The Seawolves last played on October 20 and 21 against in-state rival Alaska-Fairbanks, getting swept by the Nanooks in the Governor’s Cup. These two met just once a year ago, also in Sault St. Marie, at Alaska earned the 1-0-1 advantage.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Sophomore Max Humitz potted his fourth goal of the season in the first game against MSU last weekend. Three of his four goals are of the power play variety. Lake Superior holds the second-highest percentage of success with a man-advantage.

MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS

RECAP: Michigan State (4-2) exploded for 10 goals against Lake Superior at home last weekend, with eight different player finding the back of the net at least once. Goalie John Lethemon faced just 37 shots combined in the two games.

UP NEXT: The Spartans begin conference play with a tough road series at No. 5 Minnesota (5-3). The Gophers swept No. 9 Clarkson last weekend at home. This will be the first non-ranked opponent Minnesota as faced this season. MSU is just 2-10-4 against the Gophers since the formation of Big Ten hockey.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Michigan State freshman Mitchell Lewandowski added two goals and an assist against LSSU last weekend, giving him nine points on the year to lead all Big Ten freshmen and tie all other rookies in the country.

MICHIGAN TECH HUSKIES

RECAP: Michigan Tech (4-4-1) stubbed their toe on the road in Mankato last weekend, losing both games to Minnesota State and getting doubled up in the goal department, 8-4. Despite the sweep at the hands of the Mavericks, the Huskies remain in the polls at No. 20.

UP NEXT: Tech returns home for another conference affair, hosting Bowling Green (3-3-1) in a rematch of last season’s WCHA Championship Game. The Huskies have won four straight overall against the Huskies going back to January of 2016.

NORTHERN MICHIGAN WILDCATS

RECAP: Northern Michigan (4-2) resumes action after a bye week. They earned a split against No. 6 Wisconsin two weeks ago.

UP NEXT: The Wildcats step back into conference play and welcome in the aforementioned Mavericks of No. 9 Minnesota State, who had their way with Michigan Tech at home last week. NMU has won just twice in 14 all-time meetings with MSU-Mankato.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Senior Robbie Payne leads all Wildcats in goals (6) and points (8). His goal total has him tied for second in the nation. Already through the team’s first six games, Payne has four multi-point showings.

WESTERN MICHIGAN BRONCOS

RECAP: Western Michigan (3-3-1) is also coming off a bye week after splitting with Michigan State in a home-and-home series two weekends ago.

UP NEXT: The Broncos kick off conference play by welcoming in top-ranked Denver (4-0-2). The Pioneers steamrolled their way through Beantown and picked up wins over Boston and Boston College, tallying 10 goals in the two games combined. WMU has just five victories in 20 tries all-time vs. Denver. They met five times last season, including the NCHC Tournament consolation game, a 3-1 win for the Pioneers.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Junior Colt Conrad has notched at least one point in every game for Western Michigan this season; he leads the team in that department with 11.
