It’s safe to say the Detroit Lions let one get away in their 20-15 loss at home in prime time against the Pittsburgh Steelers last Sunday, after failing to get into the end zone even once.

Some tempers flared throughout the contest, none more at the end of the game when Pittsburgh was in victory formation. Some verbal jousting led to some physical confrontation and punches thrown, even players leaving the bench.

The NFL handed down punishment in the form of fines for said actions in that Sunday Night Football affair.

Lions safety Quandre Diggs received the biggest punishment on Detroit’s side for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Steelers tight end Jesse James that resulted in an unnecessary roughness penalty. Steelers safety Sean Davis matched his fine total for a similar occurrence against Lions wide receiver Marvin Jones.

The rest of the fines handed down are related to the late-game skirmish when the game was virtually decided. Cornerback D.J. Hayden and defensive ends Cornelius Washington and Jeremiah Valoaga were slapped with fines for leaving the bench and “entering a fight area with no active involvement.”

Two players who were at the center of the incident at the end of the game — Steelers’ Maurkice Pouncey and Lions’ A’Shawn Robinson — were not fined, despite some pushing and shoving between the two, including a punch thrown by the latter Robinson, who was eventually ejected from the game.

Pouncey had some choice words after the game, calling the Lions “dirty” for violating an often unspoken rule of football in not engaging in any extracurricular activity during a kneel-down.
