The Michigan State Spartans visit Columbus to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes this weekend. Michigan State has a history of upsetting the Buckeyes in the Mark Dantonio era, most recently at the horseshoe in 2015.

But perhaps the most memorable upset of Ohio State came in 2013 when the Spartans upset the then No. 2 ranked and undefeated Buckeyes, 34-24 in the Big Ten Championship game in Indianapolis. Here’s a little flashback:

Michigan State, Ohio State, Big TenThis game was an instant classic, with Michigan State scoring the first 17 points to go up 17-0. Ohio State then answered with 24 unanswered points of their own, only to have the Spartans score the last 17 to win the game 34-24.

The game was ultimately swung when Spartan linebacker Denicos Allen stopped Buckeye quarterback Braxton Miller on a 4th & 1 from the Michigan State 38-yard line with just under six minutes to play. Spartan running back Jeremy Langford then put the exclamation point on the game on the following drive with a 26-yard touchdown run with just over two minutes remaining.

It’s a reminder of how often Mark Dantonio has been able to upend Urban Meyer since he started coaching at Ohio State in 2012. Meyer is 3-2 against Dantonio, by far his worst record against any coach in the Big Ten. In fact, Dantonio is the only coach to beat Ohio State twice since his arrival.
