Okay, we’re not sure whether or not to categorize this as a fantastic save, or a perfectly wasted opportunity of what should have been an easy goal. Either way, it makes for a fantastic highlight.

The Detroit Red Wings and Columbus Blue Jackets were knotted at a single goal apiece entering overtime on Saturday night. An early first period goal by the Blue Jackets’ Artemi Panarin gave Columbus the advantage, and the lead they wouldn’t relinquish until the third period. Forward Andreas Athanasiou scored his second goal of the season in his eight game (first goal at Little Caesars Arena) to tie the score at 1-1 apiece, burying a nice pass from defenseman Niklas Kronwall.

There would be no more scoring during regulation for either team, leading to a 3×3 sudden death overtime. Both teams traded excellent chances on either end of the ice. But it was this save by Blue Jackets goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky that stole the show, and arguably, the game for Columbus. Athanasiou and Anthony Mantha found themselves on a two-on-none advantage, but weren’t able to convert to give Detroit the extra point. Check out the unbelievable robbery by the Columbus netminder in the video below.

With no goals scored in overtime, the two teams moved to the shootout. Both sides traded chances and couldn’t get anything past the goaltenders, until Columbus defenseman (and former Michigan Wolverine) Jack Johnson beat Jimmy Howard to give Columbus the win. The goal by Johnson snapped a 12-game winning streak via the shootout for the Red Wings, who stood at 8-8-2 following the extra session defeat.
