Outside of the city of Detroit, Darius Slay is just another name. That’s a problem. Darius Slay is exceptionally better than he gets credit for. As Lions fans, we have known this for years; Darius Slay is an ELITE corner.

Darius Slay was not given the nickname “Big Play Slay”, he earned it. The irrefutable best cornerback on the Lions has constantly gone up against the league’s best wide receivers and done such with remarkable success.

Antonio Brown, Julio Jones, Odell Beckham, that is not just a list of the top receivers in the league, that’s also a list of receivers that Big Play Slay has gone up against and kept out of the end zone this year. As a result, there is no lack of respect for Slay from receivers around the league.

From Detroit Free Press.

“Every time I go against another guy that’s on the other side that’s a great DB, they’re like, ‘Man, you don’t get enough respect,’ ” Slay said Wednesday. “Most of them be trying to say it’s because of team. I don’t think it’s because of team. I just think it’s just a name paparazzi.”

As for the rest of the league, there is a noticeable underappreciation for Slay. Although the Pro Bowl has lost its meaning over the years, leaving Slay without an invite would be downright ridiculous. Just ask “Big Play” himself, he’ll tell you the same thing.

I ain’t going to sit here and play no games, it’d be crazy if I don’t (make the Pro Bowl). It’d be crazy, just cause.”

Darius Slay has spent multiple years as an underrated and under-appreciated corner in this league and it appears he’s finally had enough. His performance and stats alone would suggest a guaranteed pro-bowl slot. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. When asked about his Pro Bowl hopes Slay replied with the following.

I think so,” Slay said. “My numbers say it. I lead in PBUs and picks, as a corner. So somebody got to just tell me something different. I travel against No. 1 guys, I follow them. I don’t hide from nobody. I think that’s what No. 1 corners are supposed to do.

Slay’s good, Pro Bowl-worthy good. To prove that I’ll leave you with this.
