By now, almost everyone has seen the brawl between the Detroit Red Wings and the Calgary Flames from Wednesday night. There were over 100 penalty minutes doled out in all on both sides, with a couple players being ejected from the game. One of those players was Red Wing Luke Witkowski, and he’s getting more than just the game misconduct for his efforts.

It was announced Thursday evening that Witkowski would be assessed a 10-game suspension for coming back onto the ice just before the brawl commenced, as he was being led down the tunnel and out of the game towards the end of the 3rd period. That action alone merits an automatic 10-game suspension on its own, per the NHL’s rules.

Flames player Matthew Tkahcuk lightly speared Witkowski in the back of his legs as he was leaving the game, which spurred Luke into coming back onto the ice out of retaliation and sparked the initiation of the brawl. The Department of Player Safety also announced Thursday that Tkahcuk would be having a hearing on Friday about his actions.

Witkowski’s suspension begins with Detroit’s game Friday night against the Buffalo Sabres, and runs through December 9th.
