Heading into the 2017 Major League Baseball season, Justin Verlander‘s goal, like any other year, was to win the World Series. Well, that’s exactly what he accomplished, except it was not with the team he started the season with.

With the Detroit Tigers out of the playoff hunt, they decided to try and trade Verlander to a contender before the MLB trade deadline. The only problem was that JV had a full no-trade clause in his contract which meant he could veto any potential deal the Tigers wanted to make unless he signed off. 40 minutes before the stroke of midnight, Verlander agreed to be dealt to the Houston Astros for a trio of minor league prospects.

As we know, everything worked out perfectly for Verlander and the Astros as they defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games to win the World Series. The championship was not only the first in JV’s illustrious career, but it was also the first for the Astros organization.

Following the Game 7 victory, Verlander and his then-fiancee, Kate Upton, grabbed their bags and hopped on a plane to Italy, where they were married.

The newlyweds were recent guests on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and they revealed that the wedding was supposed to take place on the same day as Game 7, so it had to be moved back, even though the guests were there waiting.

Take a listen to Verlander and Upton as they talk about the decision to accept the trade to Houston and about how their wedding finally came about.

  1. They could have been King and Queen of Detroit if only the Tigers could have played to their potential. Now Houston reaps the benefits.

  2. With run support from the Astros that the Tigers never seemed to give Justin, he could easily win 25 games next season, if not more.
