One day later, Speight talked to WXYZ-TV’s Brad Galli about what exactly went into the decision to leave the Wolverines and he wanted everyone to know there was no bad blood involved.

“It’s been a wild ride and, one, I wouldn’t trade anything and, two, there’s absolutely no bad blood,” Speight told Galli. “There’s certain things that are maybe hard to put into words. I’ve always been in quarterback competitions. At the bust last year, Coach Harbaugh said I’m going to be a top quarterback in all of college football next season. Then the first spring practice happened and I was splitting reps with the other quarterbacks. It was a whole other competition all over again.”

“It wasn’t that I’m not coming back because of the whole competition thing. I think that’s what a lot of people think because I’ve done that. I’ve proven time and time again that I love competition and I’ve came out on top two years in a row. Been here for four years, it’s just one of those feelings that it’s time to move on.”

When it came down to it, Speight called it a “gut decision” to leave Michigan.

“I don’t think there was one factor,” Speight said. “It’s not because Brandon Peters went in and established himself or the fans were calling for my job or anything like that. It didn’t come down to anything in particular. It’s just one of those gut feelings, that feeling in my heart. I want Michigan to be as successful as possible. At the end of the day, it’s human nature, you have to look after yourself first. It came down to a gut feeling where I had to leave home.”

There is no word yet as to where he will play his final season of college football but we do know Wilton Speight will not be wearing the Maize and Blue in 2018.
