Tigers to (finally) retire Hall of Famers’ Morris and Trammell’s numbers

With Jack Morris and Alan Trammell finally getting the call to Cooperstown, the rewards are already coming in.

That’s right folks, it only took them getting into the Hall of Fame to force the Detroit Tigers to finally retire two Tiger legends that not only led Detroit to their last World Series championship in 1984, but were also two of the best of their era at what they did. Morris is a four-time World Series Champion who played an intricate part in all four of his championships. Including the two complete games he pitched in ’84.

Trammell is half of the great middle-infield duo possibly of all-time. Not to mention the multiple Gold Glovers, Silver Sluggers, and MVP of the ’84 Series.

Honestly, I’m a little surprised, and a lot disgusted that Lou Whitaker is not part of this retirement ceremony, Hall-of-Fame call or not, “Sweet” Lou belongs just to the left of Trammell.

And in case you’re curious, Morris (#47) and Trammell (#3) are joining a very select group of players to don the Old English D and own their number: Charlie Gehringer (#2, retired in ’83), Hank Greenberg (#5, retired in ’83), Al Kaline (#6, retired in ’80), Sparky Anderson (#11, retired in ’11), Hal Newhouser (#16, retired in ’97), Willie Horton (#23, retired in ’00).
