Schefter recognized that although the league could provide clearer guidelines on gambling, players, including Williams, are already aware of the existing regulations. Schefter alluded to recent suspensions faced by other players and stressed the gravity of the situation.

โ€œThe rules are the rules,โ€ Schefter noted on the โ€œStoney and Jansen with Heatherโ€ morning show.ย

โ€œThe league probably could be and should be more clear about gambling, but the rules are something that the players know,โ€ said Schefter. โ€œAnd weโ€™ve seen players suspended in the past recently. And so, you canโ€™t do things like that. Itโ€™s unfortunate because itโ€™s a little bit of hypocrisy โ€” where the leagueโ€™s got gambling ads and sportsbooks in stadiums and all those things. But you cannot you cannot bet at your teamโ€™s facility.ย

โ€œThose are the rules. Iโ€™m sure the league will be even more clear in spelling them out, if it wasnโ€™t already,โ€ย Schefterย continued. โ€œBut, as a football player, if you are betting on football games and you are betting on your own team, you got to stop and think, โ€˜There is something that is not right here, I may be making a mistake.โ€™ Maybe guys are going to be more aware of it now. Iโ€™m sorry, that is the way it is. You donโ€™t do that.โ€

Despite the presence of gambling advertisements and sportsbooks in stadiums, players must be mindful of the regulations prohibiting betting within their teamโ€™s facility. While there may be room for the league to provide clearer guidelines on gambling, players are expected to be familiar with and abide by the existing rules. Schefterโ€™s commentary serves as a reminder that individual accountability is crucial in maintaining the integrity of the game. By understanding the potential risks associated with betting on football games, players can make informed decisions and avoid detrimental consequences.
