Aidan Hutchinson spent much of last season carrying more than the weight of Detroit’s pass rush.
There were physical questions, mental pressure and unfinished business following the serious leg injury that interrupted his rise. Now, entering his fifth NFL season, the Detroit Lions’ defensive star says that burden is gone.
“It’s extremely liberating,” Hutchinson said. “I feel like a new person physically and mentally.”
For a Lions defense built around his ability to disrupt quarterbacks, that may be one of the most encouraging developments of training camp.

Hutchinson Can Finally Focus Only on Football
Hutchinson acknowledged that his previous recovery continued to occupy space in his mind entering last season.
“I think there was a lot looming over me last year going into the season. It feels good now that everything is settled and I can really focus on football,” Hutchinson said. “I can keep what’s important in front of me.”
That freedom matters.
Rehabilitation may restore a player’s strength and movement, but confidence often takes longer. Every cut, collision and awkward landing can provide a reminder of what happened.
Hutchinson no longer sounds like a player measuring himself against an injury.
He sounds ready to attack.
Lions Giving Hutchinson the Green Light
Detroit does not plan to restrict the player capable of transforming its defensive front.
Hutchinson said his relationship with defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers has created the trust he needs to play aggressively and instinctively.
“I feel like I’m at my best when they give me the green light and I can play to my fullest potential,” Hutchinson said.
“Talking with Kacy Rodgers, it feels like I have the full green light.
“I think he has all the trust and belief in me, and I have that in him as well.
“We have a great relationship. I feel like he really frees me up.”
That could mean more freedom to attack favorable matchups, adjust his rush plan and take advantage of what he sees before the snap.
Detroit needs discipline within its defense. It also needs its best player operating without hesitation.
Hutchinson Says He Could Play Next Week
Most players spend the opening weeks of camp slowly working toward game condition.
Hutchinson believes he is already there.
“We could start next week, and I’d be all right personally,” Hutchinson said. “I know we have to install some new plays and get this defense on the same page.
“It has been a good start for us.
“It’s Year 5 for me. I could jump into it next week and be just fine.”
That does not mean the Lions will rush him through camp. There are new defensive details to learn and chemistry to build around him.
Physically, Hutchinson believes he is ready now.

The Goals Have Not Changed
Detroit’s disappointing 2025 season did not lower Hutchinson’s expectations.
“Every year, we’re shooting for the stars,” he said.
For Hutchinson and the Lions, that means more than returning to the playoffs.
Detroit wants the NFC North back. It wants another deep January run. It wants the Super Bowl opportunity that has continued to sit just beyond reach.
A healthy and mentally refreshed Hutchinson gives the Lions a far better chance of reaching those goals.
Bottom Line
Aidan Hutchinson does not sound like a player still recovering.
He sounds liberated.
The physical concerns have faded, the mental weight has lifted, and Detroit’s premier pass rusher believes he could play immediately. With Kacy Rodgers giving him freedom to attack, Hutchinson may be positioned for his most disruptive season yet.
The Lions need No. 97 at his best.
For the first time in a long time, Hutchinson feels completely like himself again.
