The Detroit Tigers are winners over the Houston Astros in extra innings this afternoon at Comerica Park after Robbie Grossman laid down a walk-off squeeze bunt in the 10th inning.
After the victory, manager A.J. Hinch explained
“We talked to Robbie about bunting before the inning…there were a lot of scenarios that were going to be in play,” Hinch explained. “It was a good enough bunt, speed never slumps. Nice win.”
The Tigers have vastly improved from what was a poor start to the year by playing .500 baseball since the beginning of May. According to HInch, his guys are finding ways how to get the job done.
“I think we have been reminding these players how well we’ve been playing since May 1. It’s obviously easy to wash away April given how bad it was, I don’t ever want to revisit that. Since May 1, this team has found ways to win games.”
The Tigers took two of four from the Astros in this series after having previously swept them on the road earlier in the year, giving Hinch a winning record against his former club. Of course, Houston is still among the best teams in baseball, so what does this win do for Hinch’s current squad?
“It’s just another reinforcement time for us that we can win today’s game. We can play against good teams, we’ve faced good pitching and beaten good pitching. When you play winning baseball, you win games….I feel good where we’re at.”
