The football world is mourning the loss of former NFL pass rusher Aldon Smith.
On Saturday, the San Francisco 49ers released a statement confirming Smith’s passing at the age of 36.
“We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith. Aldon’s undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were on display from the moment he joined our organization, having recorded one of the best rookie seasons the National Football League has seen. Beyond his excellence as a player, Aldon will be remembered for his infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into. Our entire organization sends its deepest condolences to the Smith family and all who knew and loved Aldon.”
Smith was selected by the 49ers with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft after a standout collegiate career at Missouri.
His impact was immediate. During his rookie season, Smith emerged as one of the NFL’s most feared pass rushers and earned PFWA Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. He went on to earn Pro Bowl and All-Pro recognition during his career.
Over 75 NFL games, Smith recorded 52.5 sacks, 172 solo tackles, and five forced fumbles. His dominant start with San Francisco helped establish him as one of the league’s premier defensive playmakers during the early 2010s.
The cause of death has not yet been announced.
