Heading into the 2016 season, the Detroit Lions and their faithful fans hoped that Ameer Abdullah would have a breakout season. Everything seemed to be going perfectly as Abdullah was as advertised in the Lions Week 1 victory over the Indianapolis Colts. Unfortunately, he was injured in Week 2 and was forced to miss the remainder of the season.
That loss, coupled with an injury to Theo Riddick, forced the Lions to play with backups for much of the season.
Now, according to a source, Abdullah has been fully cleared to return to the field.
INDIANAPOLIS — Detroit Lions running back Ameer Abdullah has been fully cleared by doctors to return to the field, according to a source, after missing almost all of the 2016 season with a foot injury.
Abdullah was the Lions’ starting running back at the beginning of the season and had 18 carries for 101 yards and five catches for 57 yards before tearing a ligament in his left foot against Tennessee in Week 2. The injury required surgery by Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte and kept him out for the year.
