The Detroit Red Wings have been busy so far in the first two days of free agency, bringing aboard the likes of Bobby Ryan, Jon Merrill and goaltender Thomas Greiss.

Here’s the good news – GM Steve Yzerman didn’t overpay for any of his new players.

And here’s the additional good news – the Red Wings still have plenty of cap space to work with.

Though the idea of potentially bringing aboard Tampa Bay Lightning forward Tyler Johnson did not come to fruition, the idea is that Yzerman is still looking to add another forward to the roster.

Another item on his to-do list is to take care of pending restricted free-agents Anthony Mantha and Tyler Bertuzzi, both of whom have emerged as two of the top offensive talents for the team.

According to aggregate website CapFriendly, Detroit will have a little over $22 million in remaining cap space to make that a reality after their moves in free agency so far:

Red Wings fans, we’re definitely fortunate to have Yzerman as GM.

They’ve signed goaltender Thomas Greiss, formerly of the New York Islanders, to a two-year contract. The deal will be a reported $3.6 million per season.

Greiss will be teamed up with goaltender Jonathan Bernier to form a respectable 1-2 punch in Detroit’s crease.

Last season with the Islanders, Greiss posted a 16-9-4 record. In 282 career games with the San Jose Sharks, Phoenix Coyotes, Pittsburgh Penguins and Islanders, Greiss has compiled a 137-90-28 record with a career goals against average of 2.63 and .915 save percentage; he’s also recorded 13 shutouts.

This upcoming season will see Greiss be paid $2.8 million, with the second year being paid $4.4 million; the AAV is $3.6 million:
