Ausmus, players vent frustration after failed comeback

The Detroit Tigers lost a tough game against the New York Yankees last night with a late comeback effort that once again fell short. The fans are definitely feeling the frustration with this high priced team, especially as of late. In post game interviews with the Detroit News it became clear that manager Brad Ausmus is as well.

“I’m getting tired of fighting back but losing. Let’s hang onto a lead!”

Ausmus intimated that the Tigers are not playing well, but, are also victims of bad circumstance. Here is how he described the Tigers failure to turn a double play in the 7th inning and how the Yankees executed the play in the 9th.

“Parnell gets a ground ball and if it’s five feet to the right, it’s a double-play ball,” Ausmus said, almost spitting his words. “J.D. hits a bullet (ninth inning) just within reach of Gregorius, and it’s a double play. And J.D. even hits his ball harder.”

Infielder Mike Aviles also expressed some frustration at the reason for the loss after the game last night.

“In all honesty, no one’s happy with a loss,” said Aviles, who singled to help load the bases in the ninth, ahead of a walk to Jose Iglesias and a bunt single from Cameron Maybin. “But the way we lost is something to look at.

“We were fighting, scoring runs, against three of the best relievers in baseball.”

As this video shows, the Tigers loaded the bases with no outs in the 9th and were unable to convert even with slugger Miguel Cabrera at the plate.

Early in the season it seemed that all the talk was about how the Tigers needed to get more production from their starting pitching. With Michael Fulmer and Matt Boyd turning in superb performances as of late it seems that the Tigers have another issue to solve now – falling behind and needing comeback wins. If the team can get on the same page they have a golden opportunity with a weekend series against the Chicago White Sox to make some headway in the Central.
