Lions practice at Edsel Ford H.S. in front of first responders

On Monday, the Detroit Lions traveled almost two miles west on Rotunda Drive from their Allen Park training facility to practice at Edsel Ford High School in Dearborn. The practice was not open to the general public but was part of the team’s “First Responders Appreciation Night.” The practice was a typical Detroit training camp practice, … Read more

Preseason Report: Lions vs. Jets – Special Teams

The Detroit Lions beat the New York Jets 23-3 in their first preseason game of 2015. From a special teams standpoint, most of my observations are positive, beginning with second-string kicker Kyle Brindza. Brindza, an undrafted free agent rookie from Notre Dame (and local high school star), not only handled place-kicking duties, but had the … Read more

Eric Ebron and Joseph Fauria project to be integral offensive pieces

I have a theory that the Detroit Lions may carry as few as five wide receivers on the Week 1 roster. My reasons include the inexperienced offensive line needing help blocking, and that Eric Ebron may emerge as a serious offensive threat. Add to that the fact Joseph Fauria is one year removed from catching … Read more

Lions special teams part II: Lance Moore getting reps

In my Lions preseason special teams preview, I surmised that Lance Moore could eventually get a look as an option at punt returner. That prediction came to fruition last Saturday, as the Lions played a mock game in training camp. Lance Moore was the first punt returner in the mock game at the Allen Park … Read more

Lions Special Teams Part I: Kick return duties up for grabs

This season, I’ll be covering the Detroit Lions special teams play throughout the season on Detroit Sports Nation. Here’s my first installment of training camp reports: New Lions special teams coordinator Joe Marciano inherits a special teams core of a veteran placekicker, a solid utility man punter in Sam Martin–who not only punts, but holds … Read more

Lions 3rd-round pick CB Alex Carter misses first day of camp

Cornerback Alex Carter (3rd round, 2015 draft) missed the first practice of Detroit Lions camp on Tuesday. Apparently the rookie rolled an ankle last week, but it is not thought to be serious. Carter, drafted 80th overall, is expected to get plenty of playing time in the Lions defense this year as a tall physical, outside … Read more

Burleson returns to Detroit–as a preseason broadcaster

Apparently, winning the Detroit Lions-Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association/Pro Football Writers Association’s Media-Friendly “Good Guy Award” pays dividends. Former Detroit Lions WR Nate Burleson won the award in 2012, and he’s now been slated to broadcast three of the four Lions preseason games. Burleson, who became an analyst for NFL.com/NFL Network after being cut by the Cleveland Browns prior … Read more

2015 Preview: Detroit Lions offense

Unlike my 2015 Lions Defensive preview, where it was impossible to start without addressing the departure of Ndamukong Suh, on the offensive side of the ball, there isn’t one player who isn’t returning that will make fans of the Detroit Lions shed a tear. Long-time center Dominic Raiola, who started 203 of his 219 career games for … Read more

2015 Preview: Detroit Lions Defense

When writing a preview of the 2015 Detroit Lions upcoming defensive outlook, it’s difficult to start anywhere other than with the departure of Ndamukong Suh, who left via free agency to join the Miami Dolphins this season. Suh signed a six year, $114 million contract, of which $60 million is guaranteed. A Ford Field favorite, and … Read more

Detroit Lions 2015 special teams preview

It’s out with the old and in with the older at the helm of the Detroit Lions special teams unit this season. Former special teams coordinator John Bonamego left the Lions to take the head coaching job at his alma mater Central Michigan University. Head coach Jim Caldwell then hired veteran special teams guru Joe … Read more

Vegas sets Lions’ win total Over/Under

Every year around this time, Las Vegas sportsbooks begin to release their Over/Under betting lines for the upcoming NFL season. According to the Westgate Sportsbook in Las Vegas, the “over/under” win total for the Detroit Lions in 2015, is 8.5. This means if you bet the “Over”, the Lions have to have a winning season.  “Under” bets … Read more
