Ben Johnson sees ‘promise’ in Jared Goff, Detroit Lions’ offense

We are just over two weeks away from the start of the 2022 NFL regular season and it is going to be very exciting to see how the Detroit Lions offense performs under the leadership of offensive coordinator, Ben Johnson.

Though Johnson has not yet “officially” been named as the Lions' play-caller for the regular season, he has been calling the plays during the preseason, and head coach Dan Campbell has said he has been impressed.

On Friday, Johnson spoke to reporters and he said that quarterback Jared Goff has had a “great camp.”

“I think he’s had a great camp,” Johnson said Friday. “He’s displaying a lot of confidence within this system right now and once again, we’re trying to tailor it to what he does best.”

Ben Johnson sees ‘promise' in what Detroit Lions' offense can do

There has been plenty of chatter about why the Lions have not thrown the ball downfield during the first two training camp games but considering that Johnson has kept the play-calling on a basic level, we should not jump to conclusions about how the offense will look in a real game.

In fact, Johnson has seen enough from the Lions' offense to be excited about what it can become moving forward.

“They’ve been focused, they’ve been professional. They’ve been able to take adjustments that we throw on them at the last minute and apply them and make it work,” Johnson said. “So from that regard I think there’s a lot of promise in terms of where we could potentially push the envelope here on offense. And conceptually, I think the sky’s the limit there. We can do a lot of different things with the way these guys have embraced everything. So, not to divulge too much, but feel good about what we’ve put on tape so far from a fundamental standpoint up front being able to evaluate our guys that way, and then where it can go potentially once we get into the regular season.”

If the Detroit Lions are going to take a big step forward, Ben Johnson and his offense are going to have to lead the way.
