The Cincinnati Bengals went from being the worst team in the NFL two years ago to playing in the Super Bowl two weeks from now thanks to their historic comeback victory over the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.
Despite falling into a 21-3 hole against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, Cincinnati’s defense held strong in the second half, allowing quarterback Joe Burrow to lead his team to the win.
“Our defense in the second half was unbelievable,” he said after the win. “They had a great plan on the defensive side of the ball against us, we struggled a little bit.”
“I’m just a little speechless right now, I don’t even know what to say.”
Of course, the Bengals lost the opening coin toss to start overtime, invoking memories of the infamous toss last week against the Buffalo Bills that denied them a chance to even touch the ball. However, Cincinnati would eventually pick off Mahomes, setting up a game-winning field goal by Evan McPhearson.
“I mean usually, when you lose a coin flip to those guys, you’re going home, but our defense really stopped up and made plays in the second half,” Burrow said. “On offense, we made plays when we needed to…big win for us.”
The Bengals await the winner of the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers, who are now underway at SoFi Stadium.
