Your BFF tips are here! Each week through the remainder of the season I will breakdown the fantasy impacts of the Detroit Lions players as well and their opponents. This is just one guys thoughts on a few players we’re either cheering for…or against. (BFF=Brad’s Fantasy Football)
Did you take my advice against Atlanta? I sure hope so…I naiiillleeeddddd it.
QB- First off…Did you see Matt Stafford’s awesome pepsi commercial? There is no way I bench a guy who has a “can cave”. I am slightly concerned about his eating though..pizza, come on Matty, let’s be healthy in season. Your body is a temple!
Anyhow, on to his fantasy value. If Matty has been a top 10 QB all season WITHOUT CJ, his top 3 TE’s and Reggie Bush…he sure as shit is going to be one with those guys. After the bye week, the lions are expected to get many of their offensive weapons back against a very good Miami run-defense. I expect there to be very little “working them back in”, and Stafford to throw…and throw often.
RB- Joique Bell is still the #1 RB. He’s getting more than 20 touches a game and Reggie Bush just can’t seem to stay healthy. Assuming they both are “healthy”, I see Bell getting most the carries and the more likely RB to break the 10pt marker. Bell is your goal line back which means Bush is likely only scoring on a long run or catch. I see Bell as the safe play and Bush as the “boom or bust” play. Theo Riddick may get carries but not enough to justify him in anything less than a 14 team league unless you’re playing for him to vulture a short yardage TD. Riddick has made some nice catches on 3rd down, and I expect him to be the 3rd down back, but he won’t see enough touches to justify being played with Bush back this week. Too many hands in the cookie jar for me, no Lions RB is getting a 10pt projection from me this week.
WR- Calvin! Calvin! Sweet lord the fantasy gods have returned thy star WR to health. I can’t imagine the coaches would have held him out this long to be a decoy, if CJ is playing, he’ll be a big part of the game plan. I do like Golden Tate as a top 20 WR this week. With the deep threat role back in play, I expect Stafford to be looking for Tate often on shorter routes. I could see Tate seeing 10 targets between the 20s but with CJ back, Tate is likely to lose his redzone looks. I like both Tate and CJ as starts in any fantasy format this week.
TE- So all 3 TE’s are back! None are worth playing…no idea who is going to see the field and for how much. Too much of a gamble, find your TE elsewhere.
K-Matt Prater for the win from 43 yards….no good. But wait, Lions commit a penalty and somehow get to kick again from further away. No way this will go in right? Yes! Lions win! OK, so Lions kicking is interesting…but we did make our first FG from 40-49 yards. I’ll always take a big leg kicker in a dome. Matt Prater is a top 10 kicker with the lions offensive weapons back and hopefully getting into FG range more.
QB- Ryan Tannehill reminds me of Alex Smith, or Trent Dilfer when the Ravens won the Superbowl. He’s not flashy, he’s not the most gifted, but he’s solid…week after week. He has a good offensive line, they have a very balanced attack and a deep ball threat in Mike Wallace. I like him as a 15-20pt QB this week.
WR- Mike Wallace and Brian Hartline, those are your options here folks. Mike Wallace is a weird play…he either shows up big or doesn’t. There is no middle for Wallace, i’ve got him as a play this week. Lions run defense is beastly, I expect Wallace to be a big part of the game plan. As for Hartline, less optimistic, the Lions play physical defense and I don’t see where Hartline is going to get room to work, he’s not blowing anyone away with his speed and i just don’t see where he gets open enough.
RB- When Moreno went down earlier in the season, for the year, this team was handed over to Lamar Miller. With Lamar Miller uncertain to play this team belongs to….Damien Williams? Who? Miller will be a game time decision and has been in and out at practice this week. I don’t like a “half injured” RB against the Lions stout run defense.
TE- Charles Clay is a very quick 6’4 and 255lbs and could be a real tough matchup for the Lions depleted linebacking core. He saw 9 targets last week and scored a TE where he beat a linebacker and a safety to the corner of the endzone. I think Clay will see increased targets from the screen game with Miller uncertain to play and is a top 10 TE this week.
K- Honestly, my strategy for picking a kicker is play anyone in a dome. Caleb Sturgis is 16 for 20 with a 51 yarder this season. I like him as a top 10 kicker this week.
