Boomer Esiason bashes Matthew Stafford for blocking trade

If you have been following along with all of the Matthew Stafford trade news, you may have seen the report that Stafford nixed any trade that would send him to the New England Patriots.

Now, this does not come as a huge surprise as the Patriots have brought back former Lions head coach Matt Patricia, who Stafford (reportedly) did not exactly love during their time together.

On Monday, former NFL QB Boomer Esiason joined The Greg Hill Show and he took the opportunity to bash Stafford for blocking a trade to the Patriots.

“That doesn’t surprise me. There’s not too many people who really want to go all-in and play at a level that he probably couldn’t handle,” Esiason said. “If it’s true, that’s what my speculation would be. Whoever goes there knows what Tom Brady feels and why he left. I think we all understand why a bunch of guys probably opted out when they found out Tom wasn’t coming back.

“It’s not easy playing for Bill. Then again, it shouldn’t be easy. The game is hard. I have nothing but the greatest amount of respect for Bill Belichick. I know this: That at the age of 33, if I could have played for Bill Belichick, I would’ve in a heartbeat. … If that’s the case, then I wouldn’t want him as my quarterback anyway.”

Esiason was then asked if it was possible that Stafford was blocking the trade because of Patricia, not because of Belichick.

“Maybe. I don’t know how they got along,” Esiason said. “But here’s the deal, guys. It’s pretty simple. If you trade for a quarterback or you sign a quarterback, does he raise the temperature in the locker room? Is he a difference-maker? Is he a guy that when other people see him, they react positively to the way that he carries himself? And there are so many obvious examples of it, with Tom Brady being the latest. Peyton Manning going to Denver and bringing them to two Super Bowls. Players that have that aura about them.

“I’m not so sure that Matthew Stafford has that. I think he’s a tremendous athlete. I think he’s got a great arm. He’s only played in three playoff games for the Detroit Lions over 12 years. I think he was part of the issue there. That’s why they wanted to split and Detroit wanted to get away from him. So, good for Matthew going to L.A., but if I would’ve had the chance to go to New England, I would’ve taken it. I hope that’s just a rumor and that it’s not true, because if it is, then I think it’s a bad look for him.

“…If in fact he did say that, I wouldn’t want him as my quarterback. That’s not the guy that I need. I need a guy that’s going to be all-in, that’s going to show everybody else how to play, that’s going to lift up everybody else on the roster.”

Nation, what do you think about the reports that Stafford blocked any trade that would have sent him to the Patriots?

  1. Boomer is no great source of wisdom. Patricia is the issue in my view as he tried the patriot way in Detroit and we see how that went. Bill is a genius football wise but that we see had not been easily translated to other teams.

    • Boomer ? WHO CARES ABT HIS OPINION OR WHAT HE THINKS. HE CAME UP SHORT IN EVERY BIG GAME HE PLAYED. BOOMER WAS TRASH.

      • Absolutely! The Patriots do not have any weapons! Why on earth would Stafford want to go there and play for a joyless, miserable coach and with less talent on offense than he had in Detroit? Belichick’s dominance went away when Brady left.

  2. Who the hell wanted Boomer when he was 33? Stafford has more than paid his dues, no other QB would last 12 years in a Lions uniform. The Rams will compete for the SB next year. Watson apparently has 30 teams he won’t accept a trade to, but Stafford isn’t allowed 1? Maybe DeShaun should go rebuild with the Pat’s. Of all the players to take a shot at, why would Boomer pick Stafford? Idiot!

  3. If Stanford didn’t want to go to the Patriots, that’s his decision. He doesn’t have to explain it to anybody. Boomer, mind your own business!

  4. Boomer never played to the level these guys do. He probably has some interest in New England. Anytime they played he made it sound like they were the end all be all.
The sport is different, the NFL is different than the 80’s and 90’s. Like he said, he would have jumped on the idea of playing for the Pats and Bill…I see why. Maybe he would not have been a mediocre player!
    Just saying..

  5. Boomer isn’t a has been, he’s a never was, his only shot at greatness will be 100 years from now when people that didn’t watch how mediocre he was at quarterback popular vote him into the hall of fame. He is the most negative blow hard of any pre, post or otherwise football show, he’s almost as worst as Steve Smith.

  6. Boomer sucked as a quarterback, who is he to talk , he made the list of the worst quarterback of the nfl.

  7. Are you saying that about Watson? No, that might be considered ‘racist’. Just shut up Boomer, you continue to be overly full of yourself and this is constantly in evidence on TV where you rarely acknowledge colleagues comments but willingly grab the mic to blather on. Patricia went back to NE and he was god awful….why would anyone want to play in that atmosphere. Smart move by Stafford to discount going there. Belicheck may be a good coach but he is an ass-hat personality wise.

  8. The curse of Bobby Layne lives on. Stafford gave everything Detroit asked for. I am a Lions fan. Let him go where he and his wife want to go. By the way what did Elway say when he was drafted. This is routine today to ask for a preference on teams. And the Lions got really decent compensation.

  9. Boomer… Use your head before opening your mouth. He didn’t want to go through another rebuilding season. So why go from one team rebuilding to another. Common sense. Guess that’s lost on you. I watched you play and Stafford is better than you. Jealous much?

  10. Esiason is a typical blowhard. Why does he assume that the reason Stafford rejected the Pats was because of Belichick? Seems to me that Patricia is the reason. This clown always thinks he knows everything. For someone who never won anything, he’s an expert at everything! Go play in traffic!
