General manager Brad Holmes made it clear that the Detroit Lions blueprint remains centered on drafting, developing, and rewarding its own talent. After several seasons of steady roster-building progress, Holmes believes that philosophy has delivered exactly what the organization hoped it would.
And now, it’s time to double down.
Draft, Develop, Keep
Holmes confirmed that extending the team’s young core will again be a top priority this offseason, particularly with several cornerstone players becoming eligible for contract extensions for the first time.
That group includes Jahmyr Gibbs, Jack Campbell, Sam LaPorta, and Brian Branch, four players who have quickly become foundational pieces on both sides of the ball.
Holmes didn’t hesitate when asked about their importance.
“When me and Dan first started we said we’re going to take the path of draft, develop and sign our own, and I do think that has worked so far in terms of getting us to this point,” Holmes said via the Detroit Free Press.

While all four players have delivered on the field, Holmes emphasized that performance is only part of the evaluation. Leadership, culture, and locker-room presence matter just as much.
“Those guys are priorities because they’re really good players,” Holmes said. “They’re really good players, they’re great in the locker room, they represent everything that we’re about.”
That combination, elite production paired with strong culture fits, is exactly what Detroit has been trying to build since Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell took over.

Each of the extension-eligible players fills a premium role:
- Gibbs brings explosiveness and versatility to the offense.
- Campbell has emerged as a steady, physical leader in the middle of the defense.
