BREAKING: Detroit Lions sign K Matt Prater to 3-year extension

This coming weekend, the Detroit Lions will look to improve upon their 3-3 record when they host the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday Night Football.

In advance of the big game, the Lions are expected to announce a big roster move.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Pro Bowl kicker Matt Prater has agreed to a 3-year, $11.4 million extension (with a max of $12.15 million) to remain with the Lions.

The deal includes a $3.6 million signing bonus and is expected to be made official today.

There is no question about it that Prater is one of the best (if not the best) kickers in the NFL. Since coming to the Detroit Lions in 2014, he has connected on 84 of 98 field goal attempts (85.7%), including going 19 for 24 from 50 yards or more.

In his career, Prater has been named to two Pro Bowl teams (2013 and 2016) and owns the NFL record with a 64-yard field goal.

With the Detroit Lions currently sitting at 3-3, they are clearly on the bubble when it comes to making the NFL Playoffs and to get over the hump, they should strongly consider making a trade.

According to, two Lions are good candidates to be traded before the Halloween trade deadline.
