From Detroit Lions:
The Detroit Lions announced today that they have signed free agent QB Tom Savage. Contract terms were not disclosed.
Savage joins the Lions after spending the 2018 season with the Cincinnati Bengals and San Francisco 49ers. He began his career with the Houston Texans from 2014-17, where he appeared in 13 games (nine starts) during that span.
Entering his sixth NFL season, Savage’s career totals include 181 completions, 315 pass attempts, 2,000 yards and five touchdowns. He was drafted by the Houston Texans in the fourth round (135th overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft out of the University of Pittsburgh.
Savage will compete with (and likely beat out) Connor Cook, who was slotted in as the No. 2 quarterback behind Stafford. This signing also means there is virtually no chance that Matt Cassell will be back with the team in 2019.
I would still not rule out the Lions selecting a quarterback in the mid to late rounds of the upcoming NFL Draft though I would lean more towards the later rounds after the Savage signing.
