Verbeek will serve alongside current assistant general manager Ryan Martin. Verbeek will work with Martin on player personnel decisions. Martin will continue to serve as general manager of the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Verbeek returns to the Red Wings after serving seven seasons in Tampa Bay. Verbeek previously served as a scout for the Red Wings from 2006-2010. In Tampa Bay, he served as a professional scout for two seasons. Yzerman later promoted Verbeek to assistant general manager and director of player personnel.
Steve Yzerman commented on the hiring of Pat Verbeek.
โPat Verbeek is one of the brightest minds and hardest workers in the game and has been a trusted and valued resource to me throughout my management career. He played a pivotal role in helping build the Ligntning into a Stanley Cup contender throughout his tenure with the organization. Iโm very excited to have Pat on board in the Detroit organization and look forward to continuing to work alongside him.โ
This hiring is a bit of a breath of fresh air for Yzerman. Just yesterday, he lost senior vice president Ken Holland to the Edmonton Oilers. Holland reportedly accepted the general manager position in Edmonton. Stay tuned for more updates.
