Jake Rogers, the Detroit Tigers’ catcher of the future, is set to become the team’s catcher of the present.
The Tigers will promote Rogers to the major leagues on Tuesday against the Los Angeles Angels, according to multiple people with knowledge of the situation.
Rogers, 24, is considered the best defensive catcher in the minor leagues. He is hitting .250 with 14 home runs and 52 RBIs this season between Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo.
Over the weekend, the team placed veteran Bobby Wilson on outright waivers. Wilson’s waiver period is set to expire on Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m.
With Grayson Greiner on the 60-day injured list, the team will only have one healthy catcher – John Hicks – on the 40-man roster. Enter Rogers, who could step into a starting catching role.
