From Detroit Free Press:
Asked if he could commit to Gardenhire returning next season, (Chris) Ilitch deferred to (Al) Avila, who confirmed Gardenhire will return.
Before that confirmation, Ilitch spoke glowingly about the job Gardenhire has done in his two seasons in Detroit.
“With Gardy, here’s what I would say,” Ilitch said. “Our players have battled so hard under his leadership. They are developing under Gardy. Gardy is doing a fine job and I really admire the resolve that both Gardy and Al have shown through this rebuilding process.
“It’s a grind and it’s not easy, but it is the process we have to go through to build a team that can compete on a sustainable basis. That’s really what we’re striving for. So, Gardy’s done a fine job.”
In two seasons with the Tigers, Gardenhire has led the team to a combined record of 107-201 (.347).
