According to the Massachusetts Department of Corrections, former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was found dead in his jail cell early this morning after hanging himself with a bed sheet. Hewas pronounced dead later at a hospital.
Statement from the MDOC:
“On April 19, 2017 Aaron Hernandez was discovered hanging in his cell by corrections officers at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley Massachusetts at approximately 3:05 a.m., lifesaving techniques were attempted on Mr. Hernandez and he was transported to UMASS Leominster where he was pronounced dead at 4:07 a.m. by a physician at the hospital. Mr. Hernandez was in a single cell in a general population housing. Mr. Hernandez hanged himself utilizing a bed sheet that he attached to his cell window. Mr. Hernandez also attempted to block his door from the inside by jamming the door with various items. The Massachusetts State Police are on scene and the investigation continues. Mr. Hernandez’s next of kin have been notified.”
Hernandez, who is only 27, was in the process of serving a life sentence without the chance of parole for murdering Odin Lloyd in 2013.
Hernandez was found not guilty Friday of last week of two counts of murder in the case of the July 2012 deaths of Safiro Furtado and Daniel de Abreu, though he was convicted of illegal possession of a firearm.
State Police are investigating, and his family has been notified.

After playing his college ball at Florida, Hernandez was drafted in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. He spent three seasons with the Patriots, catching 175 passes for 1956 yards and 18 touchdowns.
