The Major League Baseball Writers Association has spoken and they’ve chosen Detroit Tigers rookie starting pitcher Michael Fulmer as 2016 American League Rookie of the Year!
Fulmer beat out Indians CF Tyler Naquin and Yankees C Gary Sanchez to become the first Tigers rookie to win the award since Justin Verlander did so in 2006 and the fifth Tiger in franchise history to take home the honor.
Fulmer finished the season with a 11-7 record with a 3.06 ERA and 132 strikeouts in 26 games started. The 23-year old was among the only bright spots for the Tigers in 2016, and will look to build off a successful campaign next season.
We now await the results to see if Justin Verlander can win the AL Cy Young Award, which will be announced later this week.
