The NFL wasted no time handing down discipline to Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch after last Sunday’s loss to the Green Bay Packers. Branch was fined $23,186 total for two separate infractions, unsportsmanlike conduct ($11,593) and unnecessary roughness ($11,593), stemming from his helmet toss involving Packers tight end Tucker Kraft.

On Green Bay’s opening drive, Kraft continued blocking Branch well after the whistle. In frustration, Branch yanked off Kraft’s helmet and tossed it toward the Lions sideline. The move drew a 15-yard penalty and set the tone for a chippy NFC North showdown at Lambeau Field.

After the game, head coach Dan Campbell made it clear Branch “knows better” and needs to keep his cool in high-pressure situations. Branch himself admitted he has to be “the bigger person next time.”
Branch Has a Pattern
This isn’t Branch’s first run-in with the league office. Last season, the hard-hitting safety was fined seven different times for illegal hits and other on-field antics, including an ejection against Green Bay where he famously flipped off the crowd on his way out.
Despite the penalty, Branch still contributed defensively, recording five tackles (four solo) and one tackle for loss in Detroit’s 27-13 Week 1 defeat. But with the NFL cracking down harder on unsportsmanlike behavior this season, Branch’s style of play will continue to walk a fine line between “fearless” and “costly.”
The Bottom Line
The Lions love Branch’s edge, but these fines highlight the thin margin for error in today’s NFL. Detroit needs his fire — just not the kind that burns them with penalties and costly yardage. Heading into Week 2 against the Bears, all eyes will be on whether Branch can channel his energy into impact plays without crossing the line.
