The Detroit Lions may have caught a scare when safety Brian Branch exited Sunday’s 52-21 win over the Chicago Bears in the fourth quarter. Branch went down after what looked like a leg whip from a teammate, and fans immediately feared the worst.
Fortunately, Branch himself put those fears to rest.
According to Justin Rogers of the Detroit Football Network, Branch said after the game that it wasn’t a serious injury at all, just cramps.
Branch walked off under his own power and headed to the locker room, but it turns out the decision was more precautionary than anything else. With the Lions holding a commanding lead, there was no reason to risk putting him back on the field.
That’s a huge sigh of relief for Detroit, especially with a massive Week 3 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens on the horizon. Branch, who made a big impact as a rookie and is now a full-time safety, remains a key piece in Kelvin Sheppard’s secondary.
