WELP – Tigers swept by Indians (again); Gardenhire tossed (again)

This sure will be a long season.

The Detroit Tigers continued their slide in the standings with Sunday’s 8-3 loss to the Cleveland Indians, the second time in two weeks they’ve been swept by the Tribe. They’re 26-47 on the year now.

Cleveland was able to break things open in the second inning, scoring five times on six hits against starter Daniel Norris, who went seven innings. He struck out eight, but fell to 0-5 with a 5.48 ERA in eight starts since his last victory on May 12.

“Guys are playing as hard as they can,” he said. “It just seems like the ball is not bouncing our way, against Cleveland especially. The guys are playing hard. Yeah, we’re making mistakes and we’re a young team. It happens.

“But there isn’t any quit, which I am proud of. I’m proud to be a part of a team that you know isn’t going to quit. As long as we keep pushing forward, we’ll be fine.”

Gardenhire was ejected during Saturday’s loss, which also featured a rookie pitcher for the Tribe taking down the Tigers.

That makes an even six times Gardenhire has been thrown out of a game this year, two shy of his single-season high of eight.

“I don’t want my players to get thrown out, so I’ll continue to step up for them,” he said. “And the fine money goes to BAT (a fund for destitute members of the MLB family), so whatever donations I make don’t bother me at all.”
