The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had their way with the Detroit Lions this afternoon, absolutely crushing their hosts by a 47-7 final score at Ford Field. In doing so, they ended a 13-year playoff drought.
The Lions, who were already missing several players and most of their coaching staff, didn't help themselves with their undisciplined play. The tone was set almost immediately as Everson Griffen jumped offsides, nullifying a Jahlani Tavai sack on Tom Brady.
Four plays later, the future Hall of Fame quarterback threw what would be his first of four touchdown passes of the afternoon. The Lions would commit an additional ten penalties, resulting in a total of 117 yards for the Bucs.
Afterwards, Bucs coach Bruce Arians stated the obvious:
“There’s no doubt, their discipline or lack of, helped us tremendously,” he said in his post-game media session.
The Lions have one game remaining on their schedule before their season comes to a close when they host the Minnesota Vikings next Sunday.
