The Buffalo Bills are parting ways with head coach Sean McDermott following their divisional round playoff loss to the Denver Broncos, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport.
The decision marks the end of one of the most successful coaching tenures in franchise history. Since taking over in 2017, McDermott transformed the Bills from a long-suffering organization into a perennial contender, compiling roughly a 98–50 regular season record (around a .662 winning percentage) through the 2025 season.
McDermott famously snapped Buffalo’s 17-year playoff drought in his first season and went on to lead the team to the postseason multiple times, including five straight AFC East titles from 2020 through 2024. Under his leadership, the Bills reached the AFC Championship Game twice and posted an 8–8 record in the playoffs.
By many measures, McDermott stands as the most successful head coach in modern Bills history, overseeing the rise of Josh Allen and helping reestablish Buffalo as one of the NFL’s elite teams. Despite the strong résumé, the organization is now opting for a new direction after another postseason run ended short of a Super Bowl appearance.
