Calvin Johnson wants Jim Caldwell to return as Lions head coach

Ever since the Detroit Lions got off to an awful start in 2015, there has been constant speculation as to whether or not Jim Caldwell would be fired. Well, the head coach has just about managed to survive the entire season and now the Lions biggest superstar, Calvin Johnson is giving Caldwell his endorsement to remain with the team in 2016.

“Yeh, I love him. Everybody in the locker room would probably say the same thing,’’ Johnson said on Wednesday. “He commands respect — he doesn’t have to do much just his character, guys gravitate towards. (He’s) easily one of my favorite coaches I’ve had.’’

There is no question about it that the Lions players respect Caldwell and that they have given their all for him after a 1-7 start to the season. Since that start, the team is 5-2 and would be 6-1 if not for a fluke Hail Mary against Green Bay.

“It’s just him being him, his character, guys see that he’s a great person, that he’s a great coach. Guys want to fight for that,’’ Johnson said. “We didn’t start like we wanted to but we’re doing our best to finish the best we can. It’s just him being him, he doesn’t have to do anything extraordinary, he’s a great coach, the way he communicates to you and not just demands respect but he gives respect.’’

Johnson knows the Lions have been a different team in the second half of the season and believes that attention to detail has been the key.

“I would definitely say we’re paying a little more attention to detail here in the second half, not that it’s perfect but definitely doing a better job whether it’s hanging on to a block a little longer or being where we’re supposed to be when we’re supposed to be there,’’ Johnson said.

Whether or not Caldwell does return to the Lions in 2016 will have a lot to do with who the team hires to be their next general manager. That being said, it definitely helps when the best player on the team shows his support.
