The Detroit Tigers had a chance to take control of their ALDS series against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night. Instead, they stumbled, falling flat in front of a packed Comerica Park crowd in an 8–4 loss that now puts their season on the brink.

Down 2–1 in the best-of-five series, the Tigers now turn to Casey Mize for Game 4 on Wednesday night, and the 27-year-old right-hander is embracing the pressure.

“That’s what it’s all about”

Before Tuesday’s game, Mize didn’t shy away from the stakes.

“If there’s an opportunity to, you know, save the season? That’s about as good as it gets for me,” Mize said via the Detroit Free Press. “That’s what it’s all about. So, I look forward to that opportunity, and I don’t fear that, you know?”

And he means it.
This is a pitcher who’s been through far worse than a playoff pressure cooker, missing nearly two full seasons following Tommy John surgery, grinding through rehab, and wondering if he’d ever pitch at this level again. Now, he’s back, stronger, sharper, and ready for the moment.

Mize by the numbers

Mize’s 2025 regular season was quietly impressive: 14–6 record, 3.87 ERA, and 139 strikeouts over 149 innings. But since the start of September, he’s been on another level, posting a 3.49 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and punching out 10.2 hitters per nine innings.

That late-season surge gave Detroit confidence he could be their guy in October.

A heavy ask — but the right one

Let’s be honest: this is a massive assignment. The Mariners have been relentless at the plate, punishing every mistake they see. But Mize’s mix of power, poise, and perspective might be exactly what Detroit needs to extend their season one more day.

He’s not just throwing pitches, he’s writing his comeback story in real time.

The Bottom Line

It all comes down to this: Casey Mize vs. the moment.

If Mize can deliver the way he has down the stretch, the Tigers could very well force a Game 5 and keep the dream alive. One thing’s for sure, he’s not backing down.

“Every athlete’s dream,” he called it.

Now, he gets to live it.
