The early news about leading scorer and assistant captain Henrik Zetterberg’s injury isn’t great. He will likely miss the season ending home and home series with the Chicago Blackhawks.
The Wings couldn’t match the desperation level of a hungry Hurricanes team tonight, who got strong efforts from team leaders and NHL All-Stars Eric Staal and Cam Ward. They live to fight another day with the victory, as they must win out and get help from the teams ahead of them in order to make the playoffs.
The Wings may have wrapped up a playoff spot with a huge overtime victory against the Predators on Saturday. And yes, they may have clinched the Central division title for the 9th time in 10 years the next day with a 4-2 win over Minnesota. And while they may be locked into either the second or third seed in the Western Conference, they still have plenty to play for in the last week of the 2010-2011 NHL regular season.
The last time the Red Wings took the ice, they were shellacked by a team that will be drafting in the first ten picks of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft to the tune of 10-3. Tonight, they found themselves down 3-0 to a team they had lost four straight to, and hadn’t beaten since October. Nothing was going right for them. They could have packed it in and started thinking ahead to tomorrow’s match-up with the Wild. But boy am I glad they didn’t!
March was easily the Wings toughest Month, compiling a 5-5-4 record in their 14 games. It ended in embarrassing fashion, with a 10-3 blowout loss to the Blues on home ice. However, it wasn’t all bad, and some players really stood out and shined this month, and here is where we honor them!
In the same night that he made his NHL debut and gave up 3 goals on 8 shots, Thomas McCollum was sent back west to Grand Rapids.
I’ve been staring at this blank sheet for awhile now. You know, kind of like the Wings were doing tonight. Just standing around, staring, watching a team that wanted it far more take it from them. Brief recap after the break.
There are very few secrets between the Red Wings and Blackhawks. They play each other 6 times a year. They met in the Conference Finals in 2008. Both teams feature players that formerly played for the other side. They will only become more familiar with each other over the next couple of weeks. The Wings wrap up their season with a home and home against Chicago on April 8th and 10th, and as it stands right now would be facing them in the Western Conference Quarterfinals.
The Detroit Free Press as well as MLive had some news this morning regarding the expected return of some of the Red Wings recently injured players. Follow along after the jump to find out when we can expect to see Johan Franzen, Pavel Datsyuk and Jimmy Howard back on the ice for the Wings.
Thank whoever you pray to, but Jimmy Howard looks like he’ll be alright after all. Great work by MLive’s Ansar Khan to get that info up so quickly. Howard is going for a precautionary MRI and will likely miss Monday’s game to be safe, but unless something funky comes up in the tests, he doesn’t … Read more
Maybe you could help me out, because I sure don’t. The outcome of today’s game mattered very little in the grand scheme of things. Win or lose, the Red Wings are still going to make the playoffs. Win or lose, the Leafs aren’t. One isolated incident, about halfway through the third period, may have made all the difference in the world on the Red Wings season.
Despite a frantic end to the game that saw the Red Wings swarming the Canucks net, Roberto Luongo was able to slam the door shut on all but one Wings shot. The NHL’s leading scorer Daniel Sedin added two goals to bring his season total to 40, in a battle of the Western Conference’s top two teams.
You can forget all about that. The Wings have decided to put Osgood back on long term injured reserve, so that they could recall Joey MacDonald from Grand Rapids. Sorry to get your hopes up about being involved in an NHL game, Troy. Thanks for everything. Interesting note though, with the Passingham signing, that makes … Read more
Just a couple weeks ago it seemed like the Wings were finally going to be healthy. Boy what a difference a few games make…
