How CMU Got Caught Up in the Connor Stalions Case
Central Michigan football is back in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons, thanks to its connection with Connor Stalions, the former Michigan staffer at the center of last year’s sign-stealing scandal.
It started with the 2023 season opener against Michigan State, when a man who looked a lot like Stalions was spotted on the Chippewas’ sideline. He was dressed in CMU gear, wearing sunglasses, and appeared to be holding a small recording device. Those photos spread quickly, and the NCAA soon launched an investigation.
NCAA Allegations and McElwain’s Response
By June, Central Michigan had received a formal Notice of Allegations from the NCAA. Reports indicated that a CMU assistant coach contacted Connor Stalions directly, raising questions about how much then-head coach Jim McElwain knew. At the time McElwain publicly distanced himself.
“We … were totally unaware of it. I certainly don’t condone it in any way, shape, or form, and I do know that his name was on none of the passes that were let out.”

But according to two sources close to the team, that wasn’t the case, McElwain likely knew and may have even approved of the contact. What’s more, the presence of someone resembling Stalions on the sideline without a credential tied to him placed CMU in a difficult spot with compliance.
The Broader Fallout at Michigan
For Michigan fans, this isn’t new ground. Stalions’ operation was already tied to the Wolverines’ in-person scouting and sign-stealing effort, which led to NCAA penalties for Michigan football: more than $20 million in fines and probation tied to multiple recruiting violations.
The CMU angle adds another wrinkle, showing just how far Stalions’ involvement reached. While Michigan moves forward, Central Michigan now has its own share of questions to answer.
Why This Matters in Michigan Sports
In a state where Saturdays are divided between maize and blue or green and white, this story hits both fan bases. Michigan was punished, Michigan State was directly impacted on the field, and now Central Michigan faces its own NCAA heat. For Detroit fans who follow the broader college landscape, this controversy shows just how messy compliance in college football can get, and why schools like CMU can’t afford lapses in oversight.
